PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville baseball team travels to Quakertown, Pa. this Friday to begin their search for their second Freedom Conference title. The Valiants earned their fourth bid in five seasons to the double-elimination tournament since joining the league prior to the 2008 baseball season.
Manhattanville has made the Freedom Conference Championship four of the last five seasons since joining the league prior to the 2008 baseball season. The Valiants have won at least two games in every tournament, and in 2010 won all three games to clinch their first-ever Freedom Title and the bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Valiants are the top hitting team heading into the tournament with a .339 team batting average; the team has also accumulated 244 runs with 15 homeruns and 61 stolen bases. Individually Manhattanville has two of the top five batters in the conference as junior
Johnny LoVetere (Southbury, Conn./Canterbury) leads the team with his .437 average followed by senior
Dan Fiorito (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep) who is hitting at a .417 clip.
Fiorito led the league with 48 runs scored this season and finished tied second amongst all players in the league with nine homeruns. He also finished one stolen base shy of leading the league finishing the regular season with 21. During a four-game stretch in the middle of the season, Fiorito hit .611 with five home runs, eight RBI, 12 runs and three stolen bases en route to being named NCBWA Division III Player of the Week.
On the season Fiorito finished second on the team with 31 RBI, behind junior
Sean Ferguson (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) who led the team with 40 while hitting out of the cleanup spot in 2012. Third on the team was senior
Chris Nardozzi (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) who finished with 29 RBI, while hitting .376 at the plate, while fourth on the team in runs driven in was LoVetere with 23.
The remaining five other hitters in the regular starting lineup also hit over .300, led by junior
John Bucci (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) (.359), and sophomore
Hans Arias (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) (.312), sophomre Elias Tsouristakis (.303), while freshman
Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and
Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) tied at the plate with a .316 batting average.
On the mound the Valiants are led by freshman
Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) who finished tied for third in the league with five victories and finished eighth with his 4.63 ERA over 46 2/3 innings pitched. Manhattanville's other two primary starters are senior
Pat Yannucci (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sewanhaka) and sophomore
Alex Basso (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) both finished second on the team with three wins apiece. Basso finished the year with a6.15 ERA in 45 1/3 innings, while Yannucci finished with a 7.39 ERA while pitching 31 2/3 innings both as a starter and a reliever.
The bullpen group is led by senior
A.J. Marini (Fair Lawn, N.J./Paramus Catholic) who finished the year with a pair of saves in 11 appearances that also included two starts. Marini pitched to a 5.10 ERA over 30 innings of work and also picked up a win this season. Joining Marini out of the bullpen are junior
Don Fisher (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) who appeared in 12 games this season and pitched to a 4.58 ERA during his 11 relief outings. Sophomore
David Jones (Lanesboro, Mass./Mt. Greylock) and freshman
Joe Palmeri (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) have also been solid relievers for Manhattanville out of the bullpen.
Manhattanville's first game in Quakertown takes place against top seeded Misericordia, who the Valiants lost all three of their regular season games against in 2012. The winner of the Freedom Conference Championship will receive the league's automatic qualifying bid to the 2012 Division III NCAA Baseball Tournament.
