Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) tallied nine points on the day and sophomore
Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) had three goals and an assist to lead the Manhattanville field hockey team to a 9-0 victory over visiting Rivier College in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
It was a beautiful afternoon for field hockey as the Valiants looked to continue their winning streak while Rivier looked to put a damper on the Valiants afternoon, but to no avail. DeChent tied the school record of five assists, tying her own record set last year against none other than Rivier, and also scored twice. McGuire had a terrific afternoon, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist on the first goal for a total of seven points, while freshman
Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) also had two goals in the match.
There was scoring early and often in this match as the first goal of the game came off the stick of Smits as she hammered home a penalty corner from McGuire. The goal came just 2:35 into competition, opening the flood gates as the Valiants rolled from there. Smits scored just 13 minutes later on an identical setup with the assist this time coming from senior
Julia Esposito (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich). Only five minutes after the second goal, McGuire put home another penalty corner, this time feeding DeChent at the top of the arc, and scrambling in front of the net to deflect the ball past Rivier junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Flagg.
With a 3-0 lead headed into halftime, Manhattanville did not let up in the second half, scoring six more times to finish with a nine-goal cushion. DeChent and McGuire scored twice each in the second half, while senior
Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) and sophomore
Sharon Konfederak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/The Washington School) each had one.
Flagg had a busy afternoon for Rivier, facing a total of 23 shots and turning away 14 of those. Flagg was the highlight of the afternoon for Rivier as the team was held to only one shot in the entire match compared to 41 for Manhattanville. The freshman goalkeeper tandem of
Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) and
Ally Cybak (Wilmington, Del./Concord) had a relaxing afternoon in net as neither of them faced a shot on goal.
The win moves Manhattanville to 4-2 on the season.
The Valiants will look to continue their win streak Wednesday afternoon at home against Eastern Connecticut State, with the GoValiants.TV broadcast set to begin at 4:20 p.m.
