Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville baseball team was unable to find consistency both on the mound and at the plate on Tuesday afternoon, falling to non-conference foe SUNY Purchase by the final score of 12-5 at Purchase Field.
Manhattanville (6-4) used six different pitchers in the game against SUNY Purchase (3-2) before losing in the annual Battle of Anderson Hill Road.
Junior
Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) had a stellar game for the Valiants, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI while also hauling in two impressive diving plays in centerfield. The Manhattanville hitters struggled to get much going off the Panthers starting pitcher Chris Nast, who went six total innings, giving up only one earned run on three total hits.
Junior
Zack Zareva (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) made the start on the rubber for Manhattanville, pitching three innings while allowing one earned run before being pulled. It was evident that Manhattanville coach
Jeff Caulfield was looking to get his relief pitchers some work on the mound in this non-conference matchup.
The Panthers scored first in the top half of the first inning on a wild pitch by Zareva. With the way Nast was dealing on the mound, the Valiants were unable to get much going at the plate. The Valiants did not score their first run until the third inning when freshman
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) smoked a triple to right center, knocking in Euvino.
Purchase was hot at the plate against the Valiants' bullpen. With a runner on for the Panthers in the fourth, designated hitter Ronald Echavarria belted a home run off junior
Joe Pareres (Bronxville, N.Y./Fordham Prep) to give Purchase a 3-1 lead. The Panthers put together another big inning in the sixth, scoring three runs and taking a 7-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, there was finally some momentum for Manhattanville as the Valiants were able to get on base and score some runs. After a single by Euvino to shortstop, freshman
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) scored, pulling the Valiants within five. The Panthers began getting sloppy in the field as a wild pitch and an error at first base gave the Valiants three more runs, making it 7-5.
The 7-5 score after seven was the closest Manhattanville would come as the Panthers continued to manufacture runs. With the bases juiced in the ninth, Panthers' catcher John Jonas cranked a grand slam over the right field wall, putting the game out of reach. Manhattanville could not string together a rally in the bottom half of the ninth as the Valiants fell by a final score of 12-5.
Manhattanville will next take on reigning Freedom Conference champion Misericordia on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Dallas, Pa., in the first game of the three-game weekend series. Live stats will be available via GoValiants.com.
