Baseball Drops a Pair In Conference Doubleheader to Misericordia

Junior Nick Euvino tallied four hits, two runs and two RBIs against the Cougars.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville baseball team dropped both ends of Saturday's Freedom Conference doubleheader to Misericordia by the final scores of 12-9 and 16-4 at Manhattanville Field.

Manhattanville (6-7, 2-3 Freedom) has now lost four games in a row with three of them dealt by the reigning Freedom Conference champions, Misericordia (7-4, 3-0 Freedom).

Junior Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) had a solid day at the plate for the Valiants, totaling four hits with two runs and two RBIs in the losing effort.

Senior Alex Basso (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) took the mound in game one, throwing 2.2 innings while allowing nine runs on seven hits. It was the first start of the season that Basso did not throw a complete game. Sophomore Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) entered the game in relief and suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

After the Cougars put up four runs in the first inning, the Valiants put together a big second inning by scoring seven runs. Senior Eli Tsouristakis (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) started the rally, connecting on a single to left field, scoring freshman Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep). After a few more singles, the Valiants tied the game up at four while the bases were still loaded with Lynch coming back up to the plate. As the bases were juiced, Lynch smoked a double off the wall in right center, clearing the bases and giving the Valiants a 7-4 lead.

Basso remained on the mound in the third but had issues settling in against the Cougars. Misericordia scored five runs in the top half of the third, regaining its lead over Manhattanville, 9-7.  The Valiants were able to score two more runs in the third as both Euvino and sophomore Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) came around to score, making it 9-9.

Misericordia scored once more in the fourth inning on a single by Chris Boroch to centerfield before Mike Comerfield smacked a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 12-9. The Cougars relief pitching was able to silence the Valiants' bats at the plate for the remainder of game one, leading Misericordia to a 12-9 victory.

Junior Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) took the mound in game two and also struggled to slow down the potent offense of the Cougars. Lyon threw 4.1 innings, giving up seven runs on five hits. For the Cougars, Dan Kleish was exceptional, throwing all seven innings, giving up four runs on nine hits.

The Cougars tallied the first eight runs of the game before the Valiants scored in the fifth inning. Euvino knocked in two runs in the fifth as freshman Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and Lynch came across the plate.

Misericordia continued its dominance at the plate by belting three homeruns in the sixth, jumping out to a 16-2 lead. Manhattanville did not score again until the final inning as sophomore Nick Savarese (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) singled to centerfield, scoring freshman John Delahanty (Mahopac/N.Y.). Savarese eventually came around to score on a single to right field by his classmate Kurt Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood). The sophomores attempted to start the improbable comeback before Kleish closed the door with the Cougars winning 16-4.

Manhattanville is scheduled to take on Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Manhattanville Field. Live stats are available via GoValiants.com.
