Valiants Go Down Swinging Against The Devils

Jordanis Nunez reached base on all five of his at bats against the Devils.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville baseball team struggled to manufacture runs against FDU-Florham on Friday afternoon, falling to the Devils by a final score of 7-2 in a Freedom Conference matchup at Manhattanville Field.

Manhattanville (6-8, 2-4 Freedom) has lost its last five contests, four of which coming from conference opponents.  FDU-Florham (9-3, 5-0 Freedom) remains undefeated in the Freedom Conference with its victory over the Valiants.

Sophomore Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) gave the Valiants life for most of the afternoon by registering two hits and three walks, reaching base on all five of his at bats. Nunez tallied two of the six hits for Manhattanville, proving not to be enough for the Valiants.

Junior Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) (1-2) made his fourth start of the season, tossing six strong innings, striking out five batters while allowing four earned runs on nine total hits.

FDU-Florham jumped out early on Lyon, scoring twice in the top half of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. The Devils scored twice more in the fourth inning, including a solo homerun off the bat of Kyle Herron. With the Valiants trailing 4-0, Manhattanville continued having issues with getting runners on base.

The Valiants did not score their first run of the game until the sixth inning as Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) drove in junior Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. FDU-Florham got that run back in the seventh with a sacrifice fly of its own, making it 5-1.  Freshman John Delahanty (Mahopac/N.Y.) drove in the second Valiants' run with a single to left center in the seventh but unfortunately that would be the last for Manhattanville.

FDU-Florham collected 12 hits at the plate before earning its fifth straight conference win in the 7-2 victory over the Valiants.

Manhattanville will look to snap its losing skid in an away doubleheader against FDU-Florham tomorrow starting at 11 am. With the game originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start; both coaches are hoping to beat the expected rain. Live stats are available via GoValiants.com.
