Box Score 2 EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Seniors
Alex Basso (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and
Joe Pareres (Bronxville, N.Y./Fordham Prep) pitched consecutive complete games against Wilkes on Saturday afternoon, leading the Valiants to a crucial doubleheader Freedom Conference sweep of the Colonels, 5-2 and 16-1.
With the help of Basso and Pareres, Manhatttanville (12-10, 6-6 Freedom) head coach
Jeff Caulfield is now tied with former men's ice hockey coach and present Athletic Director
Keith Levinthal as the all-time winningest coach at Manhattanville with 202 total. The Valiants are currently on a five-game winning streak with four of those victories coming from conference play.
At the plate, Manhattanville totaled 29 hits on Saturday, including six hits and 5 RBIs from junior
Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). Joining Euvino in the hit column was classmate
Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) tallying five total hits while freshmen
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and
Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) combined for eight hits and seven RBIs.
Basso (3-1) received the start in game one, tossing seven strong innings while striking out nine batters, allowing only one earned run on five hits. With Basso pitching effectively on the mound, the Valiants were able to string together runs late in the game to pull away.
Wilkes struck first in game one on an RBI single from Ryan Herbst in the first inning, putting the Colonels up 1-0. The Valiants struggled to produce off the Colonels starting pitcher Chris Nixon until the fifth.
Manhattanville did not score its first run in game one until the fifth inning as Euvino connected on a double, scoring classmate
Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) and tying the game at one. The Valiants went right back to work in the sixth, scoring four runs on RBI singles from freshmen
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and Anselmi as well as a double from Guerra, making it 5-1 in favor of Manhattanville.
Basso allowed his first earned run in the seventh inning before shutting the Colonels down en route to a game one victory, 5-2.
Pareres (2-2) took the start on the rubber in game two, continuing his dominance by throwing seven innings, allowing one earned run on five total hits. Pareres and Basso gave up only two earned runs in 14 combined innings of work for the Valiants.
Manhattanville tallied 20 hits in game two, including four hits and four RBIs from Euvino, three hits and two RBIs from Conklin as well as two hits and three RBIs from Anselmi. The Valiants combined for 15 RBIs in game two before blowing out Wilkes by 15 runs, 16-1.
The Valiants jumped out quick in the first inning on RBI singles from Anselmi and Euvino, giving Manhattanville a 3-0 lead after one. Wilkes scored its only run of the game in the third before the Valiants started to heat up at the plate.
Manhattanville wreaked havoc in both the fourth and fifth innings, scoring five runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth, breaking out to a 16-1 lead. With the way Pareres was dealing on the mound, a 15-run lead for the right-hander was more than comfortable. Pareres continued to deal, keeping Wilkes scoreless the rest of the contest; leading the Valiants to a 16-1 game two win.
The Valiants are back to action tomorrow as they travel to take on first-place FDU-Florham in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
