Box Score 2 PURCHASE, N.Y. – Juniors
Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and
Zack Zareva (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) allowed only one total run against Delaware Valley on Friday afternoon, sweeping the Aggies in a Freedom Conference doubleheader by the final scores of 8-1 and 1-0 at Manhattanville Field.
Manhattanville (16-11, 10-7 Freedom) needs one more conference win or a conference loss from Eastern University to clinch a spot in the Freedom Conference playoffs. Delaware Valley (11-15, 5-13 Freedom) is officially out of playoff contention after being swept in three straight games by the red-hot Valiants, who have won nine of their last 10 games.
Both Lyon (3-3) and Zareva (4-0) were outstanding on the mound for Manhattanville, allowing 10 combined hits while only giving up just one total run to the Aggies in the doubleheader.
Lyon started for the Valiants in game one, tossing a complete game, allowing one run on seven total hits while striking out four batters. The only run that Lyon allowed came in the final inning of play, as the right-hander was close to flawless on the rubber for Manhattanville.
The Valiants put up four runs in the first inning as Delaware Valley starter Mike Kearney had issues with his command. Kearney walked the first four batters of the game before being replaced by Ben Lippincott. Lippincott walked the first batter he faced as the Valiants scored two runs without even putting the ball in play. With the bases still loaded, junior
Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) stroked a single through the left side, scoring two more, putting the Valiants up 4-0 after the first.
With the way Lyon was dealing on the mound, four runs appeared more than enough for Manhattanville. With that being said, the Valiants did not let up at the plate in game one as consecutive doubles from freshmen
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and
Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) brought in another Manhattanville run in the third, making it 5-0.
Three more insurance runs for the Valiants were produced in the fifth and sixth innings, giving Lyon an 8-0 cushion headed into the final inning. Lyon allowed the only Delaware Valley run in the seventh when it was Pete O'Hara doubling to left center, bringing in Jordan Heisler. Lyon's dominant command on the rubber and the Valiants production at the plate gave Manhattanville an 8-1 game one win.
Zareva started game two on the mound for the Valiants, pitching five shutout innings, allowing only three Delaware Valley hits while striking out three Aggies. Game two was a pitching dual between Zareva and Aggies starter Jake Richard as only one run was scored all game.
The lone run from Manhattanville came in the third inning when it was Lynch singling to right field, bringing in classmate
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland). Left-handed Zareva dominated Delaware Valley in his five innings before being replaced by sophomore
Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) in the sixth. Garito tossed a scoreless sixth inning as junior
Joe Palmeri (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) replaced him in the seventh, picking up his fourth save of the season, giving Manhattanville a 1-0 game two victory.
The Valiants will play next against Alvernia on Monday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Manhattanville field starting at 3:00 p.m. Live stats can be accessed via GoValiants.com
