Manhattanville Rallies Past the Monarchs in 12-5 Freedom Victory

Sophomore Jordanis Nunez and freshman Chris Conklin combined for four hits, six runs and five RBIs on Tuesday.
Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa.- The Manhattanville baseball team had seven players finish with one or more hits against King's (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Monarchs by a final score of 12-5 in Freedom Conference play.
 
Sophomore Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) led the way for the Valiants, going 2 for 4 at the plate, recording three RBIs and three runs scored in the victory. Freshman Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) also collected two hits while tallying two RBIs and three runs.
 
Manhattanville (17-12, 11-7 Freedom) has won its last five Freedom Conference games, already clinching a spot in the playoffs. King's (Pa.) (7-16, 5-13 Freedom) started off hot on Tuesday before the Valiants rallied towards the conference win.
 
Senior Alex Basso (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) (5-1) made the start on the mound for Manhattanville, tossing 5 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six total hits. The Valiants bullpen was lights out as sophomores Julian Ponce (Port Chester, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) as well as junior Joe Palmeri (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) combined to throw 3 2/3 of scoreless baseball.
 
The Monarchs jumped out early on Basso, scoring three runs in the first inning and one more in the fourth, taking a 4-0 lead after the second inning. The Valiants did not get on the scoreboard until the third as junior Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) connected on a single up the middle, bringing in classmate Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), cutting the Manhattanville deficit to three, 4-1.
 
As Basso kept the Monarchs scoreless in the third, Manhattanville put together a big fourth inning. Due to a vital King's error, the Valiants scored three runs in the fourth, tying the game up at four.
 
Manhattanville got right back to work in the next inning as Conklin singled through the right side, scoring Brady and giving the Valiants took their first lead of the game at 5-4. After the single from Conklin, Nunez delivered on a big double to left center, bringing in sophomore Kurt Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Conklin, making it 7-4. The Valiants scored one more run in the fifth when it was junior Jeff Moskowitz (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) driving a double to left field, scoring Nunez.
 
With the Valiants gathering rhythm offensively and Basso settling down on the mound, Manhattanville took over. Conklin and Nunez led the Valiants to another monstrous inning in the sixth as Manhattanville scored four more runs, taking a 12-4 lead. Both Conklin and Nunez connected on RBI singles as well as freshman John Delahanty (Mahopac/N.Y.), giving Basso and company a comfortable eight-run cushion.
 
King's (Pa.) scored the final run of the game in the sixth as Justin Martinelli singled through the left side, bringing in Ryan Civello before Manhattanville's relief pitching closed out the contest en route to the 12-5 win.
