Pareres, Palmeri Propel Valiants Past DeSales

Joe Palmeri picked up his 10th career save while Joe Pareres got the win for the Valiants against DeSales.
Box Score CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Senior Joe Pareres (Bronxville, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and junior Joe Palmeri (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) combined to pitch nine strong innings for the Manhattanville baseball team on Sunday afternoon, leading the Valiants to a 7-4 Freedom Conference victory over DeSales.

Pareres (1-2) made the start on the mound for Manhattanville, tossing 6 2/3 innings while giving up four runs with only one earned on eight total hits. Palmeri entered the game in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings of shutout baseball and picking up the 10th save of his career, making him the all-time saves leader in Manhattanville baseball history.

Manhattanville (8-10, 3-6 Freedom) lost both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday to DeSales (9-10, 8-2) before picking up this big conference win over the second-place Bulldogs.

At the plate, the 3-4-5 hitters for Manhattanville were the difference offensively for the Valiants. Sophomore Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) and freshmen classmates Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) combined for seven hits, five runs and 2 RBIs as the power trio of the Manhattanville lineup.

The Valiants struck first on the scoreboard in the second inning when it was junior Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) connecting on a single to center, bringing home Anselmi and Lynch to give Manhattanville a 2-0 lead. Manhattanville went right back to work in the third, adding three more runs on RBI singles from Anselmi and senior Eli Tsouristakis (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep), making it 5-0.

DeSales was able to chip away at the five-run lead held by the Valiants over the next three innings. After an uncharacteristic throwing error by Nunez at shortstop in the third, the Bulldogs were able to get runners aboard. Two DeSales singles eventually brought in two runs for the Bulldogs, both of which were unearned for Pareres.

With the score at 5-2 in favor of the Valiants, the Bulldogs were able to get more production at the plate in the fifth. A double by Brian Mauro brought in the third DeSales run while the fourth run came on another error by Nunez, cutting the Bulldogs deficit down to one, 5-4.

Manhattanville was able to get both runs back in the sixth inning on RBI singles from freshman Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and Nunez. Wiith Palmeri tossing in rare form on the mound, the Valiants hung onto a 7-4 victory, winning their third conference contest of the year.

The Valiants will next play at home on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup against Eastern Connecticut State starting at 4:00 p.m. Live stats are available via GoValiants.com.
