Manhattanville Athletics Hall of Fame
As one of the primary architects of the nascent men’s basketball program at Manhattanville College, Roger Dunphy left a lasting impact in his time at the school and helped to establish a winning tradition in Purchase. Dunphy was a leader from the moment he stepped on campus. He was one of the first players in Division III men’s basketball history (and the only player ever at Manhattanville) to be a four-year team captain, and was also honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player as a freshman in 1975-76 after leading the squad with a career-high 130 assists. A point guard in the truest sense, he was the first Valiant in program history to reach the 300- and 400-assist marks for a career and graduated as the school’s all-time assists leader. Dunphy still ranks fifth all-time at the school with 416 career assists and fourth by averaging 4.6 assists per game, while also cracking the school’s top-10 all-time in career free-throw percentage as well. Dunphy was one of the few Valiants to have their number retired when his #3 jersey was lifted to the Kennedy Gym rafters on January 29, 2011.
With Dunphy leading the way, Manhattanville made back-to-back NCAA Div. III Tournament appearances in 1978 and 1979, the first two NCAA berths in department history. As a steward of the young basketball program, Dunphy led the team to a 61-48 record in four seasons, including winning campaigns in each of his final three years.
Dunphy also continues to serve Manhattanville despite spending the last 30 years living in Japan and Hong Kong, as he serves as part of the college’s Alumni Ambassador Program, meeting with alumni and prospective students living in that part of the world.
