Manhattanville Athletics Hall of Fame
One of the most decorated student-athletes in Manhattanville College history, Theresa Carey defined excellence on and off the basketball court for the Valiants from 1978-82.
Â
A three-time Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) first-team All-American and a two-time first-team All-American from the American Women’s Sports Federation, Carey is Manhattanville’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, scoring 2,306 points and grabbing 1,149 rebounds in four seasons. She registered four of the top-five single-season point totals ever at the school and averaged over 20.0 points per game in each of her final three seasons, and also has four of the top-six single-game performances in program history – including a school-record 42 points against SUNY Oneonta on December 6, 1980. A two-time New York State AIAW Player of the Year and a three-time AIAW All-East Region first-team selection, Carey had scored more points than anyone in program history (before or since) after the first weekend of her junior season, and she finished in the top 40 in AIAW history in scoring.
Â
As a member of the most successful class in women’s basketball history, Carey led the Valiants to three New York State championships, multiple years with national rankings and an 84-42 record over four seasons that includes the only three 20-win seasons in program history. As a senior captain in 1981-82, the Valiants won a program-record 23 games, made the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and spent all season with a national ranking, reaching as high as third nationally in the NCAA. She had her #20 jersey retired on December 2, 1995, becoming the first Valiant to have his or her number retired.
Â
Carey also was a force in the classroom while at Manhattanville, as the psychology major earned the college’s first NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
